Subject: Boiler Plate Raceing Film
Frankie Darro made a string of bottom of the bill "Teen Adventure" films for Conn Pictures in the mid 30's after much success in Mascot Serials and some good roles in Warner Brothers "A" pictures. This is a standard racing story about a boy and his horse and winning the big race. Kane Ricmond the older, super masculine friend and role model was a frequent co-star with Darro and he's so good, you tend to over look him and his talent. Darro's wasn't hidden under a basket, either. Gladys Blake as Darro's sister plays the role just right and goes on to many years of good work, as did Richmond. Darro seemed to be typecast as a jockey, wise-guy, straightman to Mantan Moreland, etc in a long string of films for Monogram Pictures in the 40's. His work was always first rate. The story line about a boy jockey and his horse you know from the first scene but you can go along with it to the end because it is so well paced and well acted, you have to be entertained. Not Bad!
